Banning of Body Art

As most people know, tattoos and visible body piercings are banded in the workplace. In some places, this rule has spilled over into schools. Parents or schools often assume the worst for the students. Kids use tattoos and piercings as a way to express themselves and show their artistic side. Is the body art too distracting in schools? We have to keep in mind that a student with body art could be a well-rounded kid and an honor-student, or pretty much any type you could think of. On the other hand, it is possible that children who are already inclined toward bad behavior may also desire to be pierced and/or tattooed, kids who are already in a gang or trying to get into one will get tattooed or pierced to show support, and children with a predisposition to rebel might choose to act on that desire by getting tattooed or pierced. Does getting tattooed or pierced automatically mean a teen is involved in drinking, smoking, drugs, sex, gangs, animal sacrifice or conspiring with extra-terrestrial aliens? Should schools be concerned or should they allow the students to be who they are? After all, it is THEIR body.

  1. I think that tattoos and/or piercings should be allowed anywhere with one exception. If the tattoo or piercing is inappropriate then it should be covered up. Tattoos and piercings aren't even bad, it's a way for kids to express themselves and be different from everyone else.

  2. I feel that tattoos and piercings should be allowed in schools. It is up to the student to present themselves in a certain way. If the want to show off a certain image to their teachers, friends, and principal, then that is their decision.
Tattoos and piercings are not a distraction from the school day. just like wearing certain clothing is not a distraction to school work.

  3. Tattoos and piercings should be allowed in school. I cannot imagine a piercing that can be shown during the average school day that will distract students during the class period. Tattoos should be allowed to be shown unless it is obscene then it should be covered up.

  4. I once heard someone say, "anytime a teenager can express themself without opeing their mouth is a good thing." I was meant as a joke, but there is some merit to it. I think that generally when "adults" impose rules on youth they genuinely have their best interest at heart. It is a grey area. I do know quite a few people that regret their body art when they get older. Those people probably egret a lot of other stuff they did too.

  5. I think piercing and tattoos should be allowed anywhere. You shouldn't judge someone just because they have tattoos and piercings. I don't think its right that people can't get certain jobs mainly because they have a tattoos. I only think a tattoos should be covered up in school/work place if its inappropriate.
